The Open is the oldest major golf tournament in the world and always played on a coastal links golf course. Usually played in July, the four-day tournament features a mix of professional and amateur players. 156 players start. After 36 holes, only the top 70 go through for the final 36. It is arguably the most prestigious event on the golfing calendar.
THE US OPEN
Notoriously difficult, the US Open is a true test of a golfer’s mettle. The scoring is usually tight, with the final winning score rarely that far from par. The tournament tees off in June and fields 156 professional and amateur players Inaugurated in 1895, the US Open has one of the largest purses of any golf tournament.
THE PGA CHAMPIONSHIP
Third in the list of major golf championships is the PGA Championship. Played in May, it’s the only major tournament open exclusively to professional players. The four day event fields 156 players and is usually played in one of a handful of exclusive east coast golf courses.
Scheduled for the first full week in April, the Masters is where the winner gets to sport the iconic green jacket; stored in a specially designated cloakroom at the Augusta National Golf Club. It’s the only major golf tournament held at the same venue every year, and the setting where some of golf’s greatest legends made history. They include Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer.
