How Betting Sites Calculate and Pay Out Refunds
Most online bookmakers will cap your Acca Insurance. Some betting sites will limit this to £10 whereas other operators may be a little more generous and refund up to £25. This will be explained in the terms and conditions.
There is a fairly even split between bookmakers who will refund your stake in the form of a free bet and those who will pay out in cash. If you are planning to place another accumulator bet, then this is likely to be purely academic as the refund is likely to get recycled anyway.
Refunds will only be paid out once every single leg of your accumulator has been settled. If one of your chosen matches has been postponed, then this is likely to be voided and may count as a losing leg.
Your stake will be refunded. If you place a £5 accumulator on 5+ selection, you will receive a £5 free bet if one of your selections was unsuccessful. If you exceed the limit, you will only be refunded for part of your stake. For example, if the bookmaker only refunds accumulator bets up to £10 and you’ve placed a £15 six-fold accumulator, you will only receive £10 in free bets.
How do we Rank the Best Acca Insurance Offers?
Most UK betting sites now have some form of Acca Insurance offers available to UK players. As a result, it can be tricky to assess each one. Here at Mansion Bet, we’ve spent many hours ranking the bookmakers based on the strength of their Acca Insurance offer.
There are a number of factors to consider when putting together this list, and although we also considered other money-back betting offers, we primarily focused on the various facets of their current Acca Insurance promotion.
- Amount Refunded – This was an extremely important factor. Although most UK punters tend to prefer to use reasonably low stakes when it comes to accumulators, there are a number of bettors who will inevitably up the ante and opt for £20+ stakes. With many UK bookmakers only offering up to £10, this is unlikely to attract those who tend to favour larger stakes. We looked more favourably on those operators who increased their refunds to £20 or £25 and as a result, they were ranked higher on our list. If your accumulator has lost by a single selection, it’s always good to know that your full stake will be returned. ·
- Number of Selections Required – Although 5+ selections was a fairly common stipulation, we looked less favourably on those bookmakers who would only refund bets of 6+. Thankfully, this was a rarity.
- Speed of Settlement – Having tested all of the Acca Insurance offers currently available in the UK, we were pleased to report that the majority of the operators included in our list were fairly quick to process their refunds. On average, our 3pm accumulators were settled by 5:15pm. Any sites who were slower than this were penalised and moved down the list.
- Restrictions – Every bookmaker will have their own list of terms and conditions and if you keep reading, you’ll be able to see our Ts and Cs section. However, we preferred to find betting sites which didn’t limit the sports / leagues or competitions and we looked less favourably on those who limited the number of times we could take advantage of this promotion (some bookmakers limit them to one per day)
- Accessibility and Simplicity – Some bookmakers make it easy to take advantage of Acca Insurance and these sites tended to score highly. We preferred to use operators who automatically applied the insurance as opposed to those who ask punters to tick a box or confirm their participation. This may seem like a minor issue, however, if you are rushing to place your accumulator or adding selections whilst on the move, it is possible to forget/miss this option and your accumulator could easily be placed without the requisite insurance. This would prove to be particularly frustrating if your accumulator subsequently missed out by a single leg.
Acca Insurance Examples
Acca Insurance is available across a variety of different sports (depending on the bookmaker) and the majority of multiples featuring 5+ selections are likely to be eligible. Most bookmakers have a specific promotions or offers page which have further details and some betting sites also produce explainer videos.
However, we’ve put together some examples of qualifying accumulators which would have been eligible for Acca Insurance and would also have triggered a refund.
Example European Football Accumulator:
Union Berlin to beat Hoffenheim
- Lens to beat Troyes
- AC Milan to beat Hellas
- Verona Aberdeen to beat Ross County
- Real Betis to beat Getafe
This is a straightforward Win/Draw/Win (1x2) accumulator and is the most common type of multiple bet. In this theoretical example, four of the five results are successful, however, unfortunately, Aberdeen and Ross County finishes 1-1. With just a single unsuccessful leg, this accumulator qualifies for Acca Insurance and you will receive your £10 stake back as a free bet once all of these matches have finished.
- PSG -1 Handicap (vs Lorient)
- Man City -2 Handicap (vs Bournemouth)
- Ajax -1 Handicap (vs Groningen)
- Bayern Munich -1 Handicap (vs Werder Bremen)
- Real Madrid -1 Handicap (vs Elche)
In this example, the punter has assembled an accumulator using the handicap markets. Each team is required to win by a minimum of a two goal margin. PSG win 3-0, Man City win 4-1, Ajax win 3-1 and Bayern win 5-0, however Real Madrid are only able to secure a 2-1 victory. As a result, this accumulator has been let down by just a single selection and will be fully refunded (£5)
- PSV Eindhoven to beat PEC Zwolle
- Fiorentina to beat Monza
- Frankfurt to beat Stuttgart
- Brighton to beat Nottingham Forest
- Rangers to beat Hibernian
In this example, the punter has opted to place a £30 bet on this 5-fold and is clearly feeling very confident about the selections. However, the chosen bookmaker only offer Acca Insurance up to £20.
PSV, Fiorentina, Brighton and Rangers are all victorious, however, Frankfurt can only draw 0-0 with their opponents.
In this case, the punter will receive a £20 free bet, however, the remaining £10 isn’t refunded due to the bookmakers’ Ts and Cs.
- Malmo to beat Sirius
- Feyenoord to beat Sparta Rotterdam
- Marseille to beat Montpellier
- Dortmund to beat Stuttgart
- Braga to beat Estoril
Stake - £10
In this example, all five teams are victorious and the accumulator is paid out in full. Acca Insurance does not kick in here.
- Spurs to beat Burnley
- Leeds to beat QPR
- Benfica to beat FC Porto
- Torino to beat Spezia
- Club Brugge to beat Cercle Brugge
Stake - £5
Spurs were able to ease part Burnley and Leeds beat QPR, however, Benfica, Torino and Club Brugge were unable to follow suit and their matches ended all-square. As a result, only two of the five selections were successful. Acca Insurance did not apply to this accumulator and unfortunately, the £5 is lost.

Acca Insurance Tips
Although Acca Insurance is a terrific way to avoid the inevitable disappointment of losing an accumulator, it can still be fairly tricky to execute. Adding selections to your multiple decreases the chances of winning, however, it does increase your potential returns. Landing a five-fold accumulator is far easier than assembling a successful 12-team multiple.
Although Acca Insurance is a terrific consolation prize, nothing beats the joy of landing a successful accumulator on a Saturday afternoon! We’ve put together a list of tips which will hopefully enable you to improve your betting and get closer to putting together a successful sports betting accumulator.
Always do your research
With hundreds of stats sites available online, it’s easier than ever before to ensure that you are armed with plenty of knowledge before placing your accumulator. Match previews are always a handy resource and by taking in a wide range of information, you’ll undoubtedly improve your betting. This is a better approach than simply working on assumption or accepting tips from your mates in the pub!
If it doesn’t feel right, take it out!
Although we don’t recommend selecting your bets based on gut feeling, instinct can play a handy role in tailoring your multiple bet. If you have any doubts or concerns about a team’s ability to win, then you shouldn’t include this in your accumulator. There are plenty of other matches/players to choose from, so if you aren’t 100% confident in your selection, it’s probably best to overlook it.
Don’t feel obliged to stick to a single league, competition or market
The joy of online betting sites is that you can now choose from hundreds of ongoing competitions and leagues. If you want to create a successful accumulator, then you will probably need to utilise all of these options. By sticking to just one league, or just a single tournament, you are severely limiting your options and giving yourself less chance of picking winners. If you branch out, you are more likely to find matches that are easier to assess and these can become the backbone of your accumulator.
Don’t get too greedy!
Although it’s always nice to dream of winning big and landing a life-changing sum of money, in reality, it’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. Sport is unpredictable and sometimes, it’s hard enough making one prediction, let alone 15!
In order to take advantage of Acca Insurance, it may be best to stick to five/six/seven-folds as you’re likely to go fairly close with a smaller number of selections. Having a couple of winning accumulators at smaller odds is far better than going for gold and losing all of your bankroll.
