England: The Three Lions have been installed as outright Euro 2024 favourites. The team has been creeping towards silverware in recent years: they lost the 2018 World Cup semi-final in extra time, and were only eliminated on penalties in both the Euro 2020 final and World Cup quarter-finals in 2022.

Can England overcome these fine margins and win Euro 2024? The issue for a country which hasn’t won a major trophy since 1966 is the weight of expectation. On paper, they should go all the way. In reality, the pressure could prove too much.

France: Despite crashing out of Euro 2020 to Switzerland in a shock round-of-16 exit,. France are second-favourites for Euro 2024. They narrowly missed out on the 2022 World Cup on penalties, and won it in 2018.

Arguably, France are not quite the same team they were two years ago. Paul Pogba is facing a four-year ban for using illegal substances, Balloon d’Or winner Karim Benzema has retired from international football, and it remains to be seen how they bounce back from such a heartbreaking World Cup final.

Germany:  Many of you will be lumping on Germany at odds of 11/2 given that they have home advantage. And our England-supporting readers will have Germany’s devastating impact on the pitch firmly fixed in their heads from past eliminations, having won only three of their 11 competitive head-to-head matches.

But home advantage has less of an impact than you may think. Since 1960, just three countries have won while hosting the Euros, and the last team to do so was France in 1984. This could suggest the odds on Germany should in fact be higher.

Spain: At their last three major tournaments, Spain have been eliminated by Russia, Italy and Morocco. Even though Italy won that event, they were not exceptional – and Spain should have been able to overcome the others with relative ease.

Spain have also been drawn in a very difficult group, going up against Croatia, Italy and Albania. To win Euro 2024, they’ll need to be at the top of their game right from the start and never let up.

Portugal: After winning Euro 2016, Portugal were eliminated from Euro 2020 before falling to Morocco at the Qatar World Cup in 2022.  One problem which arose in 2022 was that of Cristiano Ronaldo. The icon won the Golden Boot in 2020, but was pushed in and out of the team in 2022, and has since been plying his trade in a much less competitive league after transferring from Manchester United to Al Nassr. 

If he does play, will he still be sharp enough to make an impact aged 39? And, if he doesn’t play, will his lack of presence cause too much of a stir and distraction for Portugal?

Teammate Bruno Fernandes will also need to massively improve on his lackluster performances back in Manchester, despite a late flurry to win the FA Cup. He’ll be heavily fatigued; he was the only player in Europe’s elite to play over 70 matches in 2023.

Our Prediction: France to Win Euro 2024

The Euro 2024 winner odds would suggest England are favourites, but the country’s history of failure – especially in nervy moments, like penalty shoot-outs – makes it risky to bet big on them at such short odds.

Having researched the teams in some depth, I find it hard to rule out France – as long as their key players stay fit. Had a couple of penalty kicks gone differently in the World Cup 2022 final, they’d likely be hot favourites – and that’s exactly how I see them.

The outright winner market for Euro 2024 is one of the simplest markets to understand. You just bet on the team which you think will lift the trophy, and if they do, you win. It doesn’t matter how they win, including extra time or penalties, as the outright winner market is purely about which country will become champions.

The Euro 2024 outright winner market is one of the earliest to open, long before any match betting or other markets open closer to the time of the tournament. You can also make each-way bets, which usually pay out at half the specified odds if your team finish as runners up.

Once you’ve decided which team you want to bet on, you then need to devise your best betting strategy. Here are three top tips for betting on your Euro 2024 favourites:

1. Look at the group. If your team has a tough group, like Spain or Italy, they are likely to have much shorter odds after escaping that group. So, if you’re backing them to win, why not get your bet on early at higher odds?
2. Plot out the route. By taking the time to analyse which teams are likely to progress, you can make an educated guess on the likely route to the final for each country. It won’t be 100% accurate, but if a team could potentially face back-to-back favourites, you may want to rethink whether it’s worth betting on them.
