US Masters 2023: Tournament Preview & Latest Betting News

The first golf major of the year takes centre stage in early April as the prestigious US Masters Tournament is staged at Augusta National.

With plenty of sportsbooks offering free bets on the event, the Masters offers punters an ideal opportunity to boost their bankroll.

The Masters is always fiercely fought, so read on as we assess some of the key betting angles to consider before placing your wagers.

Highlights

  • Big guns eager to shine
  • LIV stars with a point to prove
  • In-form Finau is one to watch

Follow the Top 25 at the Masters

The latest PGA rankings have been a useful yardstick for success in recent years, with the last ten winners all in the world’s top 25 heading into the event.

That trend is inevitably reflected in the latest StarSports betting, with the top three places in the ante-post market filled by the top three players in the world.

Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm are currently priced at 15/2, while Northern Irish star Rory McIlroy is the 9/1 third favourite.

Scheffler won the Masters last year, but no player has gone back-to-back in the tournament since Tiger Woods achieved the feat in 2001 and 2002.

Rahm and McIlroy will both likely be in contention, but they are plenty short enough in the betting given the quality in the rest of the field.

LIV Stars Add an Intriguing Betting Dynamic

The world of golf has been shrouded in controversy since the breakaway LIV Golf tour was launched in June last year.

Backed by Saudi Arabian investment, the new series lured away some of the world’s top players with the promise of bumper earnings.

While this caused a split in golf, the Masters organisers confirmed they would allow LIV golfers to compete in their event this year.

Of the players who joined the rebel tour, Dustin Johnson’s odds of 22/1 to win the Masters could look generous if he is in contention on the final day.

He won the event in 2020 with a record 20-under-par score and has the ability to match the top talent in the PGA if everything falls into place.

Finau’s Form Points to a Strong Showing at Augusta

Tony Finau is priced at 25/1 with StarSports and he may well be worth an interest given his run of form this season.

The 33-year-old won the Houston Open last November and has since recorded another three top 10 finishes to climb up to 12th in the world.

He averages the third-most birdies per round (4.88), while his scoring average of 69.675 is bettered by just six other golfers.

Finau has finished inside the top 10 in three of his five appearances at the Masters and will fancy his chances of claiming the title this year.

With each-way terms of one-fifth on the first six places available, Finau holds plenty of appeal for punters looking for value in the each-way market.
