Epsom Derby Festival 2024: Betting Trends for the Epsom Derby

The eyes of the horse racing world will be on Surrey this weekend as the 245th edition of the prestigious Epsom Derby is staged. 
 
With question marks hanging over race favourite City Of Troy, punters will be tempted to seek value bets on betting apps for the 12 furlong contest. 
 
We have studied the recent record books to uncover some key betting trends that we think will help you pick the winner of this year’s big race. 

• 21/22 – Ran within the last five weeks. 
• 20/22 – Raced no more than five times previously. 
• 19/22 – Finished in the first two last time out. 
• 18/22 – Had previously won a Group race. 
• 18/22 – Returned 7/1 or shorter in the betting. 
• 15/22 – Had run over at least 1m 2f before.

City Of Troy was touted as a potential superstar by trainer Aidan O’Brien before running poorly on his seasonal reappearance in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. 
 
O’Brien has remained bullish about his chances ahead of the Derby, although it would be a brave move to back his charge on horse racing betting sites this weekend. 
 
The horse may prove his doubters wrong by hacking up at Epsom, but he makes limited appeal as a betting proposition in a competitive race. 
 
By contrast, stablemate Los Angeles ticks many of the ‘key trends’ boxes and could be well worth supporting in the Epsom Derby market. 
 
The son of 2012 Derby hero Camelot was a Group 1 winner as a juvenile and made a successful return to action in the Leopardstown Derby Trial in May. 
 
He has been handed a useful draw in stall four and could be the value bet to maintain his unbeaten record with the step up in distance guaranteed to suit him. 
 
Godolphin's Ancient Wisdom has been well supported this week, while Lingfield Derby Trial winner Ambiente Friendly could also be dangerous. 
 
However, Los Angeles is fancied to give O’Brien his tenth success in the race by outsaying his rivals over the last couple of furlongs.
