EFL Play-Offs: Championship, League One & League Two Promotion Race

The 2022/23 English Football League Play-Offs are guaranteed to provide plenty of drama and thrilling moments when they are staged during May.

The race to win promotion from the Championship, League One and League Two culminates with three games at Wembley Stadium on the final weekend of the month.

Four teams from each division will battle it out in semi-final matches for the right to keep their promotion dreams alive in their respective sections.

We’ve scoured the recent record books to assess the key betting trends we think will help you pick which three teams will win promotion via the play-offs.

Highlights

  • Recent history against Sunderland in the Championship
  • Sheffield Wednesday the team to beat in League One
  • Don’t rule out Salford City in League Two

Sunderland Face a Tough Task in the Championship

A superb 3-0 victory at Preston North End on the final day fired Sunderland above Millwall into the Championship play-offs.

Tony Mowbray’s side face Luton Town in the semi-finals, with the winners meeting Middlesbrough or Coventry City in the final.

Sunderland can be backed at 3/1 with 10bet to win promotion having being priced at 14/1 before the final round of matches.

However, recent history is against them, with Blackpool the last sixth-placed team to win promotion at the end of the 2009/10 campaign.

Sheffield Wednesday Look a Cut Above in League 1

Sheffield Wednesday ended the regular season in League One on 96 points - the highest total ever not to clinch an EFL promotion.

Most of the best football betting sites rate them as 6/4 shots to win the play-offs and it would be a brave move to back against them achieving the feat.

They finished ten points ahead of Barnsley, 15 in front of Bolton Wanderers and 21 clear of Peterborough United and will be tough to beat in the play-offs.

With three of the last four League One play-off finals won by the team finishing third, the Owls will rightly fancy their chances of clinching promotion.

Recent History Gives Salford a Shot at Promotion

Salford City sneaked into the play-offs by the skin of their teeth, with just one goal keeping them above Mansfield Town in the final table.

They are priced at 3/1 to win promotion, but have landed a tricky semi-final tie against Stockport County. Carlisle United or Bradford City await in the final.

However, recent history suggests it would be foolish to write off Salford’s chances, with six of the last 13 play-off finals won by the team finishing seventh.

It is worth noting that just four points separated the four teams in the final League Two standings, which makes this promotion race too close to call with any confidence.
