Euro 2024 Betting: England Drift After Iceland Defeat

England are ranked as one of the favourites to win the 2024 European Championship in Germany despite failing to win major silverware since 1966.

The Three Lions head into the tournament on the back of a dismal defeat against Iceland at Wembley Stadium in their final warm-up match.

Read on as we look at who is representing England this summer, before assessing some of the key betting angles for the upcoming tournament.

Highlights

  • England ease in the betting after Iceland defeat.
  • Southgate under the cost ahead of Euro 2024.

England Euro 2024 Betting

Most football betting sites rated England as 3/1 shots to win Euro 2024, but the home defeat against Iceland sparked a shake-up at the head of the market.

France are now the 7/2 favourites with several bookmakers and they could be even shorter by the time the tournament gets underway on Friday.

The Three Lions can be backed at a best-priced 4/1 on a handful of UK betting apps, although those odds are unlikely to tempt savvy punters.

Gareth Southgate’s side are priced at odds of 2/5 to claim top spot in Group C ahead of Denmark (4/1), Serbia (8/1) and Slovenia (10/1).

England Euro 2024 Preview

England produced a dismal performance against Iceland on Friday evening and you would be hard-pushed to wager on them emerging as the winners of Euro 2024.

Southgate’s decision to axe Jack Grealish and James Maddison from his squad could come back to haunt him, particularly if they reach the latter stages of the tournament.

Each of the teams in their opening group have the potential to cause problems and there is no value to be had from backing them to claim top spot.

Denmark looked good in friendly victories over Sweden and Norway, and look worth a punt at odds of 4/1 on several new betting sites to win Group C.

England should have enough about them to finish runners-up, which would potentially pitch them into a tricky last-16 tie against hosts Germany.

The biggest hindrance to their hopes is Southgate’s overly cautious nature, which repeatedly results in the team producing disjointed performances.

His persistence in playing full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield is an experiment which needs to be ditched if England are to have any chance of winning Euro 2024.

Having surprisingly called up Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, the England boss needs to release the shackles and fast track him into the team.

Wharton has the ability to run games in the centre of the park and England’s chances of success would be much greater with him in the starting XI.

However, Southgate will probably revert to type and England fans will be forced to witness yet another failure at a major international tournament.
