Dubai World Cup 2024: Betting Trends for Meydan Showpiece

The eyes of the horse racing world will be on the United Arab Emirates this weekend as the prestigious Dubai World Cup is staged at Meydan Racecourse.

The $12 million race has previously been won by some iconic horses including Cigar (1996), Dubai Millennium (2000), Curlin (2008) and Arrogate (2017).

We have studied the recent record books to uncover some key betting trends that we think will help you pick the winner of this year’s big race.

Highlights

  • Reigning champion must defy history.
  • Horses aged five or over have a strong record.
  • Saudi Cup winner bidding to complete the double.

Dubai World Cup Key Trends

Here are some of the key trends for the Dubai World Cup since the race was switched to Meydan in 2010.

  • All 13 winners raced in the last eight weeks.
  • 12/13 winners had won Group/Grade 1 or 2 races.
  • 11/13 winners previously triumphed over 1m2f.
  • 11/13 winners finished first or second last time out.
  • 6/13 winners came from stalls 5-8.
  • 9/13 winners were officially rated between 119-123.
  • 8/13 winners were aged five or older.

Senor Buscador Aiming to Complete Famous Double

While historical trends do not always repeat themselves in horse racing, they undoubtedly provide some useful pointers for the Dubai World Cup.

Ushba Tesoro is the worthy favourite on horse racing betting sites after winning the race last year and he ticks several key trends boxes.

He is well drawn in stall five and should run well, but makes limited as a betting proposition given that only one horse has won this race twice (Thunder Snow – 2018 & 2019).

Second favourite Kabirkhan has won both his starts in the United Arab Emirates easily, but he will need to take a big leap forward to emerge victorious here.

Derma Sotogake has been a popular pick with punters in recent weeks and his key trends profile gives him every chance of winning this race.

However, the value bet this weekend is Senor Buscador, who had Ushba Tesoro and Derma Sotogake behind him when winning the Saudi Cup last month.

Jockey Junior Alvarado rode a well-judged race on that occasion and he believes the step up to ten furlongs will suit the six-year-old.

Newgate could also run well for trainer Bob Baffert, who has saddled the winner of the Dubai World Cup on four previous occasions (1998, 2001, 2017 & 2022).
