Copa America 2024 schedule – everything you need to know

2024 is set to see a fantastic summer of football. Not only will the European Championships take place, but this summer will also see North and South America’s greatest national teams battle it out for Copa America glory.

The Copa America is one of the oldest and most prestigious  football tournaments in the world and the action for this year’s tournament is due to take place in the United States. Stars such as Lionel Messi, Vinicius Jr and Neymar are all set to feature and the action is set to be played amidst a fever pitch atmosphere.

This year’s tournament is set to be the biggest and best version of the tournament in its history.

Lasting just under a month, the action will take place across 14 different American cities. Sixteen teams have qualified and they will be placed in four Copa America groups. Those that qualify will take part in the Copa America playoffs and will battle it out for the right to be called Copa America champions.

Strategizing your betting

With matches taking place almost every day between the tournament kicking off on the 20th June to the final itself on July 14th, there are plenty of games for you to bet on and get involved in.

Tournament schedules can often dictate what matches to focus and there are many different elements that you can take into account when trying to find the perfect bet.

Here are some different strategies that you could keep an eye on in order to place the best bets possible.

Time of the match

America hosted the both the 1994 World Cup and 2016 Copa America and on both occasionsthe one thing the tournament was remembered for was its heat!

If looking to place bets in during the group phase of the tournament it could be worth waiting until the evening matches where the weather will be cooler and the quality of game is likely to be higher.

During the tournament the weather in America is set to be hot and dry. Matches played at the height of the day could see fewer goals due to the fact that players will be trying to conserve energy. Games in the group phase are due to take place at 6pm and 9pm. The 9pm matches should be played amidst a cooler atmosphere.

Beware the meaningless matches

The goal for all of the Copa America qualifiers is to advance through to the knockout phase as quickly as possible.

Each team who has qualified for the finals will play three matches as a part of the group stage. If a team wins their first two matches, there is a good chance that they would have already progressed through to the knockout round and a manager may decide to rest their star men in their final group game.

If this is the case, you might want to avoid this team as if they rest their key men they could succumb to a shock in their final game.

The same can be said of a team that has already been eliminated before their final game. If a team has nothing to play for they could be a dangerous proposition to bet on. They could want to end their tournament on a high or could go out with a whimper. Wide changes are likely to take place and teams with nothing to play for should be avoided.

Explore other markets

The way that tournaments like the Copa America are structured ensure that the strongest teams qualify for the knockout phase. This can sometimes mean that the odds for the group games can be quite one sided.

If you are struggling to see any value, alternative markets such as handicaps or specific markets such as the total amount of goals, corners or cards could be great ways to bet and play. All of these markets should provide better value than short priced outright favourites..

As the tournament progresses goals may go down

It’s common that in tournament football as the rounds progress and the stakes get higher, the matches might get tighter and the overall amount of goals may go down.

Games in the knockout rounds can become tight and cagey with both sides knowing what is at stake. If you like betting over or under on the total amount of goals, it may be worth checking the trend of the knockout games to see if goals are being scored or not.

Remember if knockout games end up being low scoring, this could bring the threat of extra time and penalties, both outcomes can provide some excellent value and could be worth considering as viable betting options.

Structure of the 2024 Copa America

Like most major football tournaments there are two phases of action, the group stages and the knockout phase. Lets explain this in a little more detail below

Group stage

Sixteen teams will make up the Copa America qualifiers 2024. All sixteen teams will compete in four different groups with all of the group stage matches taking place across different cities in America.

Each team will play three games in the group phase with the top two in each group qualifying for the quarterfinal phase of the tournament.

Knockout

Eight teams will progress to the knockout phase of the tournament with each of the four group winners taking on each of the four runner ups.

The winners of the four quarterfinals will progress through to the semifinals with the two winners proceeding to the final.

The two teams that lose in the semifinals will compete in a 3rd / 4th playoff.

Important dates and times

The 2024 Copa America will last for just under a month. The tournament will kick off when defending champions Argentina play their first game against either Canada or Trinidad and Tobago. The game will be held at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atalanta.

  • Group stage: June 20 to July 2

Each team will play three games in the group phase with the final round of group matches concluding on July 2nd.

The group phase of the tournament will usually see two matches played every day. There will be a match held in the early evening and one later at night. Timings are likely to be 6pm and 9pm. However they could vary slightly due to America’s different time zones.

All of the group matches will see games played in New York, Charlotte, Miami, Texas, Arizona, LA, Las Vegas, Orlando and Kansas City.

  • Quarterfinals: July 4 to 6

The four group winners will square off against the four teams who finish second in their group. There will be a quarterfinal on the 4th and 5th July. The two final quarterfinals will be played on the 6th July.

With the exception of the two matches on the 6th all quarterfinals will take place at 9pm.

  • Semifinals: July 9 and 10

The final four teams will play two semi finals over the 9th and 10th July. Both semi finals will be held in New York and will kick off at 8pm.

The two losing semifinalists will go onto play in the third and fourth playoff on the 13th July.

  • Final: July 14

The final will take place in Miami on the 14th July and its expected to be one of the showpieces of the summer. With millions set to tune in all over the world the game will kick off at 8pm.
