Recapping the 2022-2023 Raptors Season

Holding the final playoff position in the Eastern Conference with a 26-30 record, the Raptors were left in an interesting spot heading into the 2023 trade deadline. They were unlikely to win the Championship, and a large portion of the fanbase expressed desire for the team to sell of expiring assets.

Fred VanVleet and Gary Trent Jr are expected to decline their player options in the offseason, but the team elected to hold onto both with the hope of competing for the remainder of the season. General manager Masai Ujiri packaged a top-six protected 2024 first-round draft pick to address the team’s biggest position of need, acquiring center Jakob Poeltl.

This only improved things slightly, as the team went 15-11 the rest of the way. The Raptors finished an even 41-41 and needed two consecutive wins in the playoff tournament to advance to round one of the playoffs.

Unfortunately, they were held off by three points by the Chicago Bulls and the team’s former top player DeMar DeRozan – concluding a frustrating 2023 for Raptors fans.

2023-2024 Raptors Expectations

The 2023-2024 season for the Toronto Raptors is filled with question marks. Newly acquired center Jakob Poeltl is now a free agent while Fred VanVleet and Gary Trent Jr. (the teams second and third highest scorers) are expected to decline their player options.

The team has the ability to resign all three players, but this would leave them with the same roster that finished .500 last season and limited financial flexibility to improve. This is also the final season all-star Pascal Siakam is under contract and OG Anunoby has a player option for 2024-2025 – meaning the Raptors will likely be left with more difficult decisions this deadline.

Scottie Barnes is the team’s top asset, and they are looking to build around him and their upcoming first round pick which is projected to be 13th overall.

Toronto Raptors Betting Guide

Looking to bet on the Raptors but unsure where to start? This section highlights the most popular wagers to place and explains how to read Raptors betting odds. We have also given you a solid betting strategy and provided Raptors betting trends you need to be aware of.

Popular Raptors Betting Markets

  • Raptors Moneyline - The moneyline is the simplest wager in sports. You are placing your money on which team will win the game with no other stipulations. They can win in overtime – the only requirement is the team you wager on is credited with a win in the NBA standings.

Example – Toronto Raptors (-120) vs Chicago Bulls (+105)

The Raptors are the favourite, and the Bulls are the underdog. You will receive $10 if you place a $12 wager on the Raptors.

  • Raptors Point Spread - This is a slight variation on the moneyline, putting point differentials as a stipulation. This is done to provide more opportunities to bet on the underdog –  even in games between two teams of significantly different skill.

Example – Toronto Raptors (-12.5) vs. Detroit Pistons (+12.5)

In this scenario, if you wager on the Raptors they must win the game by 13 points or more. If you wager on the Pistons, they must win the game or lose by less than 13 points. Odds are traditionally set at -110 on each side.

  • Raptors Over/Under - For totals betting, the winner/ loser of the match is irrelevant. All we are concerned about here is the total amount of points scored between both teams.

Oddsmakers will set a fair total, and you can choose to bet on the true total to be higher (over) or lower (under) than this number. Similarly to the point spread, odds for these wagers are almost always set at -110 for each side.

    Example – Toronto Raptors vs. Philadelphia 76ers over 214.5 (-110) / under 214.5 (-110)

  • Raptors Prop Bets - Prop bets (short for proposition) are wagers that do not hinge on the final score of the game. Some of the most common Raptors prop bets include player total points, rebounds, assists, and threes.

    Example – Pascal Siakam over 22.5 points (-120) / under 22.5 points (-110)

  • Raptors Futures - Futures require you to pull out the crystal ball, as you are wagering on something that will ultimately be decided down theline. The most common types of future bets involve final regular season standing, awards, or teams to win the NBA finals.

Example – Raptors to win the 2018 NBA championship (+1850)

How to Read Toronto Raptors Betting Lines?

Looking at betting lines can be intimidating at first, but we can assure you, understanding what they represent is much simpler than it seems. Odds are based on the implied probability of that wager winning, and they represent the amount of money you will receive if your bet is successful.

The lower the odds are, the more likely the wager is to win, meaning you will receive a lower payout if it does. The opposite is true the higher the odds get – as they increase, so does your potential payout since the wager is increasingly more unlikely.

There are three main systems used worldwide to represent odds (American, Decimal, and Fraction) but the most common one you will find is the American system.

For this, a minus sign (-) is used to represent the favourite while a plus sign (+) is used to represent the underdog. The higher the number next to the plus (+) is, the greater your payout. The higher the number next to the minus (-) is, the lower your payout.

To simplify things, let’s look at this in terms of a $100 bet. The odds for the favourite (-) represent how much you will need to bet to earn $100, while the odds for the underdog (+) represent how much you will earn if you wager $100.

Example – 76ers (-150) vs. Raptors (+120)

If you place a $15 bet on the 76ers, you will profit $10. If you place a $10 wager on the Raptors, you will profit $12.

How to Take Advantage of Raptors Betting Lines?

In order to maximize your return for Raptors betting, here are some things we recommend:

  • Always check the injury report and factor that into your decision.
  • Take scheduling into consideration – upsets are much more likely to happen if a favourite is traveling and near the end of a tiring stretch.
  • Look at past head-to-head matchups.
  • Understand that athlete performances can be “streaky,” meaning you need to factor in recent performances significantly.
  • Take advantage of the live betting feature to obtain more favourable odds based on results that have already occurred.
  • Understand that odds are everything in betting – look for the most favourable prices rather than just betting on the most likely results.

Toronto Raptors Betting Strategies

Here are some simple strategies to increase your bankroll both early on and throughout your betting career.

  • Take advantage of welcome bonuses

Welcome bonuses give new users the opportunity to build a bankroll quickly without investing a large amount of their own money. The best sportsbook bonuses require only a small deposit to obtain a much larger amount of free bets credits (Bets $10 receive $150 in bet credits).

The great thing about welcome bonuses is there is no limit to the number of sportsbooks you can sign up for. So using multiple books to wager with house money to begin your sports betting career is an excellent strategy. Keep in mind that once you sign up for a sportsbook, you are activating their welcome bonus for good. If they improve their offer in the future and you have already signed up, you will not be able to obtain it, so choose wisely.

These bonuses often have stipulations, so always make sure to read the terms and conditions. The most common “catch” is a playthrough requirement on the bet credits before you can deposit. A 1-2x play through requirement is reasonable, but some sportsbooks reach as high as 10x making their bonuses not worthwhile.

  • Shop around different sportsbooks for the best odds

If you are already taking advantage of bet credits from multiple different sportsbooks, we highly recommend looking at the odds from each of your sportsbooks before you place a wager. Getting more favourable prices makes a big difference in the long run, and overtime you will learn which sportsbooks offer the best odds for each of your favourite markets. Using odds widgets that compare multiple different books is a great way to save time.

  • Know when to look for odds boosts and promotions

Odds boost and promotions will pop up sporadically for existing customers, but there are specific times of year you need to be on the lookout. Sportsbooks love to offer promotions at the beginning of a new season or during large sporting events. This including the NBA Championship, the first day of the playoffs, and the Raptor season opener.

NBA Format

The NBA consists of 30 teams separated into two conferences of 15. Within each conference is three division of five. The Raptors are in the Eastern conference and the Atlantic Division along with the Celtics, 76ers, Kicks, and Nets.

They play each of those four teams four times and every team at least twice over the course of the 82-game season. Teams play four games against six out of division conference opponents, three games against the remaining four conference teams, and two games against each team in the opposing conference.

The Raptors play half of their games at home in Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena. Games consist of four 12-minute quarters with as many five minute overtimes quarters needed for a winner to be decided.

NBA Playoffs Format

The top 10 teams from each conference officially make the NBA playoffs. The top 6 teams in each conference receive a bye to the first round, while the remaining four teams seeded 7-10 enter a play-in tournament where two teams advance in each conference.

Play In Tournament

The 7 and 8 seed teams play each other, and the winner is ranked as the 7th seed for the first round. The loser of this game will play the winner of a game between the 9 and 10 seed teams. The winner of this game is ranked as the 8th and final seed for the first round.

Remaining Playoff Format

The first round consists of the following format from each conference:

1 vs 8 – 2 vs 7 – 3 vs 6 – 4 vs 5

  • The winner of the 1 vs 8 game will play the winner of the 4 vs 5 game.
  • The winner of the 2 vs 7 game will play the winner of the 3 v 6 game.
  • There are three rounds before the NBA finals.
  • Once an Eastern Conference and Western Conference champion has been crowded, both teams will square off for the NBA Championship.
  • Each series is a best-of-7
