Horse Racing Tips, Predictions & Best Bets – 08/09

MansionBet - Horse Racing Best Bets

Sunday’s race card might be light on meetings with just two events at the UK at Fontwell and York to analyse, but it has the potential to be heavy on profit. As per the usual routine, we’ve compiled a selection of three horse racing betting tips for the day’s action. Check them out below.

Best Tip #1:  Sergeant – Fontwell, 15:40

Sergeant scored by a winning margin of eight lengths at Newton Abbot on his last outing in August over 2m 1f and Anthony Charlton’s in-form charge can follow that up with another bold bid at Fontwell today.

He has an 8lb rise to combat and a slightly longer trip to overcome, however, this progressive type seems to be on the up and he gets the nod again.

The Height Of Fame could pose a challenge with Thomas Bellamy in the saddle, meanwhile. The 7-year-old has a record of 6-17 over hurdles but has raced only twice this year.

Wins at Newton Abbot in July and a run to second at Worcester a month later impressed, however, and keenly priced on the best betting sites for horse racing, The Height Of Fame has plenty of appeal.

Best Tip #2: Dance And Romance – York, 16:35

Dance And Romance shaped up well to finish third at Glorious Goodwood in what was easily a tougher race than today’s at York and Andrew Balding’s unexposed 3-year-old could be the one to back here.

He delivered the goods in two of his three races before that solid effort at Goodwood and the well-bred youngster is open to further progression. The experience of Oisin Murphy should help.

The rest of the field is more competitively priced, with Modern Times one of the more interesting players.

He can be a bit of a slow starter, though he was well-backed when finishing second at Thirsk last month on what was his second start for Iain Jardine’s stable. Wreck It Ryley, who won at Ripon over 6f last time out, is another name to consider.

Best Roughie: Continuance – York, 17:10

The Elevator Company Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap feels like a proper tossup between a number of different contenders, though Continuance could be worth siding with at large odds on the best betting apps.

He broke his duck with a comfortable win at Chepstow on May 31st and clipped into fourth position at Ripon and Sandown after that. He competed well against one of today’s fancied horses, Fast Steps, on that occasion, so each-way possibilities are strong here.

Fast Steps has been a consistent sort in 2024 and was in the mix at Epsom in late August before finishing in an unflattering fourth.

Wins at Newbury and a good effort at Sandown (2nd) preceded that performance at Epsom and this reliable 6-year-old could be in the frame again at York. Poet’s Dawn, who was a winner at York in 2019, made all to win at Carlisle on his last run on August 29th, and could push on again today.

Stats and Insights

  • The hurdles track at Fontwell is a left-handed oval-shaped run that covers approximately a mile around. Gary Moore has been the most successful trainer at Fontwell over the last five jumps seasons, recording a mammoth 61 wins over that period.
  • The setting at York tends to favour gallopers due to the sweeping bends and lengthy run-in up the home straight. Jockeys Tom Marquand, Daniel Tudhope and Oisin Murphy have all tasted success at York before on multiple occasions and all three are riding at today’s meeting.
  • For trainers at York, look out for William Haggas, Richard Fahey, Andrew Balding, Kevin Ryan and David O’Meara. All four of those horse masters have won at least 25 times each at York over the last five seasons of flat racing at the course.
