Before 1995, the clubs held all of the power in the football transfer system and even when a player\u2019s contract expired, his team could still demand a transfer fee to facilitate a move away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, a relatively unknown Belgian midfielder named Jean-Marc Bosman shattered the system with a groundbreaking legal case<\/a> that changed how football\u2019s transfers and contracts worked forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1990, Bosman\u2019s contract with RFC Liege was expiring and he wanted to move to French club USL Dunkirk. Liege wanted a fee, despite having no intentions of keeping Bosman on the books, which eventually led to the move collapsing, which put the player in limbo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An irate Bosman subsequently took a case against the Belgian club to the European Court of Justice, arguing that the rules violated EU principles on the free movement of workers, and after some lengthy deliberation, he won.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 15 December 1995, the ECJ delivered its landmark ruling, which meant that out-of-contract players within the European Union could now move to another club without a transfer fee and without their old club\u2019s permission.
