Over the 91-year history of the World Cup finals, we\u2019ve had some sometimes unusual and often unexpected participants from a wide variety of nations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Qatar, a country smaller than Yorkshire in size, made its World Cup debut in the 2022 edition as the host nation. At that time, the country only had a population of 2.65 million, making it one of the least populated nations in the world as well. But, how does it compare to the smallest nations to ever feature in the FIFA World Cup?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the emergence of the Nations League competition, the expansion of the Euros, and the World Cup to be expanded in 2026, we may well see more of these \u201cunusual\u201d participants, thanks to smaller nations getting more competitive experience and more places to fight for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, keeping this in mind, these are the smallest countries ever to make it to the World Cup finals in almost 100 years of the tournament\u2019s history:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Slovenia (1.99 Million in 2002): Little Dragons Made Big Impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Slovenia had a population just shy of the two million mark when they qualified for the 2002 World Cup in South Korea\/Japan. The Little Dragons eliminated the likes of Switzerland, Yugoslavia, and Romania to qualify for the tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Srecko Katanec\u2019s men reached the milestone two years after making their debut at the Euros. But for many Slovenians, the World Cup is remembered less for on-field success and more for the infamous fallout between Katanec and star man Zlatko Zahovic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zahovic was sent home after Slovenia\u2019s 3-1 opening match defeat to Spain. Slovenia played South Africa and Paraguay in their next two matches, and lost both of them. They would return to the Biggest Show on Earth in 2010, but failed to progress beyond the group stages again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Kuwait (1.5 Million in 1982): World Cup of Minnows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hosted in Spain, the 1982 World Cup saw the number of participants in the tournament increased from 16 to 24, allowing more participants from the African and Asian Federations. This meant that Algeria, Cameroon, Honduras, and New Zealand all qualified for the first time \u2013 but it was Kuwait that really stood out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a population of just 1.5 million<\/a>, Kuwait managed to build a national team that not only qualified for their first World Cup ahead of nations like China, South Korea, and Australia, but also won the Asian Cup in 1980 and the biannual Arabian Gulf Cup seven times between 1970 and 1990.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They gave a decent account of themselves, earning a point against Czechoslovakia and going down 1-0 to an England side containing Peter Shilton, Glenn Hoddle, and Trevor Francis \u2013 the first million-pound player the lone scorer \u2013 but, after exiting at the group stage in 1982, they have so far never managed to qualify for a second tournament appearance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After being placed under FIFA sanctions in the early 2000s, they\u2019re now seeing the first green shoots of recovery and may well return to the global stage in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
